“So when was my very first experience as a copywriter? This is our series The Accidental copywriter and this is another story taken from the book so I actually I have two experiences but I don't know if they really kind of cheating but I'll share them with you anyway.

I began writing I actually pen to paper writing words when I had a punk band when she was in the late 70s when I was a young snotty Punky teenager and of course somebody had to create the posters, I actually have one of these original posters also on a photograph but somebody had to create the posters when we dedicate to make sure people came to watch us and that was me.

I created a posters so that was probably one of my very first experiences as a 16 year old but my first real truthfully business experience was as a hairdresser I kept getting fired for all kinds of reasons and it wasn't my work was was terrible, it was just I couldn't work for people.

I just found it too difficult I couldn't be I couldn't be told what to do by employers I suppose so in 1985 was was the very last time I had a job and I walked out of a job again and I thought oh no I've just bought a house also and I need to pay the mortgage and the mortgage was an insane something like 150 pounds a month at the time but I didn't have any money.

So I had to I decided to put an advert in the paper to just say this is Alan I've now left such and such a salon uh you can follow me here leave a message and I will um blah blah blah so it wasn't direct response it wasn't anything like that but looking back it was kind of direct response because first of all I was telling I was reminding him who I was I was creating a headline a hairdresser Alan Forrest Smith here. I was telling them a little bit about myself I was telling them I was now mobile I was creating an offer which was I will come to your house I will bring everything blah blah blah and there was a call to action which was pick up the phone and call me now.

I didn't copy I didn't know it was an advert but really that was probably one of the early seats that was planted in my mind because I saw when I run adverts because remember there's no mobile phones when I ran the address at the time when I came home my parents um answer service at home voicemail at home was completely packed if you remember it was on a cassette tape so you had to wipe the tape clean but we ran out of tape so suddenly I went from this unemployed hairdresser to a hairdresser it was completely booked up for the next week and again that was probably one of my earliest experiences outside the punk band of actually writing copy to build business and in this case my business which just really seeds for the future I suppose.

Anyway that's another story from the book The Accidental Copywriter um you'll find it on Amazon or you'll find on my website or of course, if you want to become a copywriter my acclaimed five-star program copywriting Mentor is bespoke entirely for you, and no one else uh you'll find links on the page that's it this is Alan Forest Smith, The Accidental copywriter until the next story I'll see you then.
