How Easy Is It To Become an A-List Copywriter?

So How Did I Become a Copywriter - An A-List Copywriter?

If you’ve read my best-selling book - The Accidental Copywriter here - you can skip this bit).

I wrote my first sales copy – a simple flyer – for my first business in 1985 (although I wrote my first posters for my punk band in the late 70s.) From that point forward I always wrote my own adverts and sales copy despite having no idea what I was doing. All I knew was I needed someone to call me and book me. I wrote a newspaper ad, a flyer and a business card.

By the year 1989, I opened my first high street business in Lancashire, England. Again, I had to write my own advertising or sales copy for my salon business because I didn’t have the money to pay someone to do it for me. My one salon eventually became three salons. Those salons rose from a position of zero to number one salons. This was due to the sales copy, marketing and advertising I had been relentlessly doing.

Out of 35 well-established hairdressing salons in a town of 125,000 population, my salon went from new to almost going bust to being the number one salon in town. This was due to the volume of advertising and copy I was creating. I wrote a book about this whole 20-year experience called - The Salon Punk.

Incredibly I still have copies of some of these salon adverts I wrote from 1989 onwards. See the blue one? It was so successful I ran it unchanged for 17 years - despite all the typos.

Copywriting Direct Mail Every Week For 17 Years - And I Was a Hairdresser

Over the next period of years, I wrote and sent out literally hundreds of thousands of direct mail pieces (at least 500 - 1,000 direct mail letters every Tuesday) hundreds of thousands of flyers, vouchers, signs and some long-running newspaper Ads.

Ads that I never changed for over 17 years due to their unbeatable response and success rates. I am self-taught as a copywriter, but the results were just huge for me. So huge in fact I managed to build myself a huge 5-bedroomed detached house in its own acre of land from my copywriting results.

Then due to the massive amount of relentless daily marketing, I was doing (with no training – not a single bit) I started to also get noticed by local business owners. They began to ask me not about the salon, but about who or which company was doing my advertising. I explained it was me writing all of them.

After they stopped laughing - literally - some went on to ask me if I could create letters, ads and other business materials for them including writing a lot of direct mail letters at the time (pre-web era).

And of course, I accepted most of what was asked of me. During this time, my amateur copywriting skills sold over £1.2 million in sports cars for one salon client that owned a garage named KINGS. Phil the owner was a total eccentric that told everyone the story of how he had half of his brain removed as a young man. This was a true story and he told it hilariously. Then I helped to sell over £800,000 in orders for a small start-up cosmetic business. This was for one of my salon reps.

I also helped to sell a warehouse full of UPVC windows for another company. I also sold tons of Chinese imported tea, Oil from Israel, stop-smoking products, accounting software and jewellery and tree services and more from writing copy - part-time above my salon.

During this period I was still a hairdresser and happy being a hairdresser. This was the early to mid-nineties.

And that’s only just the beginning…

… I Was Handed £1500 In a Plain Brown Envelope For Writing Three Short A4 Letters

One day in the salon I was doing a haircut. The haircut was on a man named Richard. Richard is an accountant with his own practice. He was also an early adopter of software for his clients and he wanted to sell this software to them.

During the haircut, Richard asked me a question. The question was this.

‘Alan, who does all of your marketing and writes those letters that keep coming to my house?’

I replied, ‘I write them, I do it all.’

He then looked at me surprised and asked me the second question.

‘Could You Write Some Letters For My Accounting Business?’

I smiled and replied, ‘Sure, I can have a go for you.’ I replied I would try because frankly despite writing quite a lot of copy for clients I really didn’t have the confidence to do this for others. I can’t spell, I had no idea about grammar and frankly people wanting haircuts was very different to something called, ‘software.’

No money was agreed for writing the letters, but I told Richard I would call him when I had written the letters for him to pick up. I’ll be honest, I was nervous. Writing for myself was easy despite my lack of qualifications. Writing for someone else always made me extremely vulnerable.

So, in between salon clients, I would run upstairs to my small office, sit and write his letters. It took me around an hour or so. When I got time I then called Richard to ask for his address so I could put the letters on a floppy disc and mail them over.

Some days later, Richard called me. He loved the letters but asked if the grammar and spelling would be fixed (told you). I simply said, ‘Yes’ despite the fact I had no idea what grammar was. I am not saying that with pride I am simply relating I was a hairdresser with zero formal education at this point.

But the good news is I knew an old school teacher from my school days. I asked her (Mrs Gee) what was grammar and if she could help me fix it in these letters. Once the grammar had been fixed I called Richard. Finally, he arrived at the salon for the updated letters. I was with a client doing a haircut at the time he arrived so I had to tell the client, I would be just a couple of minutes while I took Richard upstairs.

Once we got into the small office I gave Richard the floppy disc with the finished letters and despite the fact, that no money had been agreed upon…

And that’s not all. I had no idea what was in the envelope. I was so busy I ran back downstairs and carried on with my haircut. I think 4-days passed before I went back to the envelope. I can tell you I had never seen this amount of real cash at one time and certainly never been paid anything like that for ONE HOUR of writing!

I Had Just Earned More from One Hour of Writing Than I Would Earn In a Month!

But wait because there’s more. In those days – around 1995 – I was earning from my hairdressing business around £350-500 per week. It was good money in those days but it was hard work. Now all of a sudden and pretty shockingly I had been paid the equivalent of 3 months’ wage - £1,500 for one hour’s writing - I can still remember that moment today. It felt completely insane at the time.

Are you with me so far?

• I had written three A4 letters or around 900 words.

• My salon business was paying me £12.50 per hour for insane hours, long days and hard, hard work.

• I had just been handed £1,500 for one hour of writing that felt nothing like work!

This was my welcome to a world of paid copywriting.

I Repeat - PAID £1500 For One Hour Writing!

By the way - I knew nothing about the detail or skill of copywriting at this stage. I had never even heard of the word copywriting. All I knew was I had to write letters to keep my salon business busy. And now I can write letters to clients to keep their businesses busy.

And the pay was seemingly easy to ask for and quite frankly it felt ridiculous.

This was around 1993-5 when that side of things began.

After that, I never gave copywriting for other businesses a lot more thought. I was just busy with my own salons at the time.

And then this happened. I got asked to write for a hair cosmetic company. Then I got asked if I could write for a local car sales showroom. Then I started to have referred strangers that had nothing to do with my salon walk into my salon and ask for a copywriter named Alan.

My staff never had a clue who these people were asking for so I had to inform them that I had another business that I did part-time upstairs. it wasn’t a business it was just a favour here and there. There was no structure, it was accidental and I never asked for a fee. But the good news was they loved to pay me.

This New Accidental Part-Time Copywriting Business Was Now Paying Me Far More Than My Salons Could Ever Pay Me

It gets better - By the year 1999/2000, I had been recruited to work alongside the great copywriter Michel Fortin. By the year 2001, I had decided to seriously consider selling my salons or dropping out of writing as they were both in conflict with time. I was now also earning tens of thousands of dollars a week as a high-demand copywriter.

By 2003 I had sold my salons and was writing for some of the world’s biggest best-known marketers and companies globally. By the year 2003, my copywriting business had become a full-time occupation.

By 2008 I had travelled around the globe six times. Worked and spoken with the likes of Jay Abraham, Brendon Bruchard, Armand Morin. T. Harv Eker and literally a massive who’s who of business.

By 2008 I had also met my own marketing hero Jay Conrad Levinson in Atlanta Georgia USA. We were to become good friends for years after.

By 2010 after a bitter, destructive and disastrous divorce, I was declared bankrupt. After some related health problems (like my attempted murder by so and so) and being homeless for around six months. It was crazy!

This led me to write myself a new car (my previous car had been repossessed), pay for a house, buy furniture from scratch and the rest of the nice things I needed in life. Writing copy helped me to do that over a six-week period. I repeat I had written myself a car, house and new life in just SIX WEEKS!

There’s more - Then in 2015, I wrote myself and my new wife a New York wedding. Business class flights, diamond rings, hotels the lot. I took zero out of the bank and just wrote them. My copywriting had paid for them.

By 2018 I was again sending out invoices for copywriting and strategies for well over six figures for a single job.

Recently while in the gym I got paid £3,000 in advance whilst working out. Copywriting saved my life on many occasions.

As I write to you I am currently finishing a £4 million pound sales letter for a herculean project I am working on. So there you have it. It seems I do have a little front-line experience.

Over The Years I Have Literally Had Tens of Thousands in Cash (and more) Thrown At Me!

I have been paid more money as a copywriter than I could only have ever dreamt about as a hairdresser. I live and have created a life on my own terms. I no longer chase clients. I work only with one or two clients annually. They always approach me.

Working this way gives me more income than I could ever wish for. Again, I am not telling you this to show off I am simply telling you about my own life as a copywriter. My hours are my choice. My time is my choice. My daily routine is my choice. Some weeks I really never stop. On other weeks I do nothing apart from drinking coffee, thinking and playing endless Star Wars with my young son.

Sounds far-fetched I know. All the odds were definitely stacked against me. I had no finished education. I walked out of school at just 15 years old. I was then a hairdresser. I had no writing experience. I had no copywriting training. And yet somehow I ended up as a respected copywriter who has written copy for well over 600 industries.

And that’s really not all. I’ve also spoken in front of well over 25,000 people and has now run my acclaimed mentor program since 2004. I have also written literally dozens of best-selling sales letters whilst making some of my clients very rich indeed. One letter I wrote pulled in just over £15 million in sales in just 3 weeks.

Today, I mostly write for my own projects, and just one or two clients, and work with mentee students like yourself. I am also an author, filmmaker, and director and have five businesses including a property business that takes my time.

Today, I have happily married again and have two beautiful new children to complete our love.

What Would You Want From Being a Copywriter?

Time and time again I hear a huge variety of reasons for wanting to be a copywriter. Do you want to be a copywriter full-time or part-time? Part-time can give you an extra few grand or a few hundred a month. That’s your choice. I myself still write for clients part-time and can ask for £50,000 per copy project plus bonuses and commissions.

But Alan, I Have Never Written A Thing.

How can I write copy?

The simple fact of the matter is I will have you writing as a copywriter in - 4-WEEKS - guaranteed (if you do as I say.) I have all of my copywriting mentees before you and all of those mentees ahead of you will do so. You won’t get away with not doing this. My secret method for writing sales copy in just 4-weeks is flies in the face of copywriting convention.

Let me share this. Here is how I partially learned. I took existing adverts or letters and then created my own version of them.

I will show you how you can take some of the best copy in the world and adjust, tweak and recreate it into your own copy. There is nothing wrong with doing this. We call it swiping in the industry and it is absolutely ethical when done properly.

This is NOT a copy of someone else’s advert this is a new advert or sales copy generated in your mind by you and you only. I will show you a behind-closed-doors secret for doing this in a smart way.

You don’t need experience just a dedication to make this work for you. All you need is to do exactly as I tell you. This means practising for an hour or more each day writing and making sure you read exactly what I tell you to read. It really isn’t that hard.

That’s what I did … so I know it can be done, but - it can take years even decades to learn how to write copy this way.

When I did it that way it took me years of doing good things, but also years of doing things that didn’t work. Today's marketplace for copywriters is far more complicated and I will tell you why.

It’s a cheap way of doing it yet it’s a costly way because truly your time is money.

Let me take you back a step in my own life.

By the late 90s, I not only had three salons, but I was working insane hours over 7-days a week for years. My staff were getting paid more than I was when it came to pounds per hour. I would drive a short 5 miles every morning which would take one hour.

After we were talking on the phone the other day I got to thinking about the last couple of years since we first met… and about what being trained by you has done for me in that time.

Over the last couple of years I’ve taken trips to different places around the world to visit friends from other countries. I’ve literally just done this when I’ve felt like it with little or know interruption to my business. How many people can do that?)

And most important, as you know I was just recently able to relocate overseas to live with my girlfriend with very little hassle. How many people can do that?

How many people can do these things, literally just up and move their entire lives overseas without it affecting their businesses at all? Well I could and it’s thanks to you more than anyone else.

My Lifestyle … AWESOME!

Almost everyone I meet who asks what I do, thinks my lifestyle sounds awesome – many are straight up jealous. I tell them they could have it too, they just have to do what I have and find someone like you who knows what they’re talking about and really cares.

I could go on for ages but you know the deal. Like everything else in life, business is a game that has it’s up and downs. It’s no secret that the most successful people in life have failed more times than they’ve succeeded. A large factor in creating that success is who they’ve got beside them as mentors and allies. I wouldn’t have it any other way than having you beside me as mine.

You’ve Been There So I Succeeded

You’ve been there for me over the last couple of years more than I ever expected.

When I’ve needed help, advice or guidance – I’ve got it.

When I’ve suffered a setback and needed a friend who understands what I’m going through – I’ve got it.

Now and then it's nice for me to share a clients little story. Dan is a mentor member of mine.

That's Dan above showing off in his custom car. He sent it to make me jealous, he knows I love custom everything.

Sometimes life isn't as smooth as we like, as you'll read.

Dan used to be a plumber. I say used to be, he is self-employed now rather than working for his dad. They never fell out, in fact quite the opposite, Dan worked with his dad until his dad died very suddenly.

It was Dad's business Dan worked in. It was Dad's house Dan lived in. Suddenly a steady, OK, paced lived went hurtling down towards the ground with no immediate stop in sight.

When Dan was speaking to me he told me the thought of starting his own plumbing business from scratch or patching up his Dad's bankrupt business had zero appeal for him.

You put enough shit on us at the class last week I felt it was the Aussies go! Mate, thank you once again for last Saturday. I received a call the other day from my media company informing me my website was ready for launch. When it was presented to me I thought the text looked like shit… So I re wrote it all.

Using your techniques saved me a bucket load of time and now I feel it will really get the results I was hoping for. I’ve been watching the dvd’s you gave us, they are brilliant! Just a little reminder, as I am dead keen to see and use them….Things are going well – I sold the land I talked to you about abroad (bahamas). I wrote out some copy, put a plan in motion for press releases to get it sold – no need – I put an advert in hot property alert and it sold in a day and I couldn’t believe it.

Used the copy skills you taught me, but the editorial team changed the headline and made the ad sound more boring, but kept the facts from research I did. Just proves that copy is so important, even in a small ad!!

I sent the email on Tuesday afternoon, about 10 minutes later I checked my inbox and was pleasantly surprised to find I had 16 replies from potential customers asking for quotes – by the end of that afternoon I had nearly 50 emails asking for quotes, and I ended up staying in the office until 1am finishing them all! Then the next day I had about 10 more! In the following 3 days, I took over $21,450.00 – and this week, what should have been the quietest of the year, ended up being the most successful week of the year so far! And, I estimate conservatively that I’ll pull in another $17,800.00 – $35,760.00 more, over the next couple of weeks as a result of this one single email!

This stuff is just crazy, I’d heard of results like this in the past but I didn’t really think they were real, I suppose they’re not until you see them for yourself, but I’ll tell you what, this is just the beginning, now I know what’s possible with the stuff I learned at the weekend, I’m not going to stop creating results like this, for my own businesses, and for my clients!
